The subsistence practices of Holocene communities living in the Nile Valley of Central Sudan are comparatively little known. Recent excavations at Khor Shambat, Sudan, have yielded well-defined Mesolithic and Neolithic stratigraphy. Here, for the first time, archaeozoological, palaeobotanical, phytolith and dental calculus studies are combined with lipid residue analysis of around 100 pottery fragments and comparative analysis of faunal remains and organic residues. This holistic approach provides valuable information on changes in adaptation strategies, from Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to Neolithic herders exploiting domesticates. A unique picture is revealed of the natural environment and human subsistence, demonstrating the potential wider value of combining multiple methods.

Summary
The early modern Atlantic economic system depicted by the previous essayists in this volume – in which labourers from Africa cultivated sugar, rice and tobacco crops in America that were marketed in Europe – developed in unexpected and unusual ways in one important region of the Atlantic world. In Virginia and Maryland, market forces created a plantation system at the close of the eighteenth century with a surplus of agricultural labourers. Elsewhere in America, labour shortages were endemic, especially in the sugar plantations on the Caribbean islands where the work gangs could only be sustained through massive and continuous importation of new labourers. Why a surplus developed in the Chesapeake by 1800 is well understood, but the management practices of the leading planters with the largest number of labourers during the first two decades of the nineteenth century have been little examined. This chapter endeavours to throw some fresh light on the post-revolutionary Chesapeake agricultural labour pattern. From the 1620s to the 1770s, tobacco had of course been the Virginia and Maryland mainstay. As Jacob Price has demonstrated in his masterly series of books and articles on the transatlantic tobacco trade, this staple crop was marketed skilfully and profitably by English and Scottish entrepreneurs, with much of the Chesapeake production re-exported from Britain to France and other European venues. From the beginning, the colonial tobacco planters required a large and dependable supply of unskilled manual workers for their labour-intensive crop.

Diffraction-contrast TEM, focused probe electron diffraction, and high-resolution X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the dislocation arrangements in a 16µm thick coalesced GaN film grown by MOVPE LEO. As is commonly observed, the threading dislocations that are duplicated from the template above the window bend toward (0001). At the coalescence plane they bend back to lie along [0001] and thread to the surface. In addition, three other sets of dislocations were observed. The first set consists of a wall of parallel dislocations lying in the coalescence plane and nearly parallel to the substrate, with Burgers vector (b) in the (0001) plane. The second set is comprised of rectangular loops with b = 1/3 [110] (perpendicular to the coalescence boundary) which originate in the coalescence boundary and extend laterally into the film on the (100). The third set of dislocations threads laterally through the film along the [100] bar axis with 1/3<110>-type Burgers vectors These sets result in a dislocation density of ∼109 cm−2. High resolution X-ray reciprocal space maps indicate wing tilt of ∼0.5º.

Summary
Ever since Curtin published his seminal study of The Atlantic Slave Trade, in which he pointed out the glaring disparity between the massive traffic to the Caribbean and the marginal traffic to North America, historians have been trying to explain the sharp demographic contrast between the two regions. Why did the slaves imported to the West Indian sugar islands die faster than they propagated, while the slaves imported to North America experienced marked natural increase? Four features of the Caribbean slave system are now commonly emphasized: the lethal disease environment, the high proportion of African-born slaves with low fertility, the inadequate slave diet, and the brutal and exploitive labor regimen.
This essay focuses on the last of these factors, and discusses the impact of the Caribbean labor routine upon the enslaved cane workers. My framework was established by Higman, who has used the British slave registration records of 1813 to 1834 to analyze the overall labor pattern in the British West Indian sugar islands during the closing generation of Caribbean slavery, and my methodology is borrowed from Craton, who has used the detailed plantation records at Worthy Park estate in Jamaica to present the first microcosmic account of a Caribbean slave gang in action. Like Craton, I have been scrutinizing the records of a particularly well-documented Jamaican sugar plantation: Mesopotamia estate in the western parish of Westmoreland.
